Magazine Terminology

What are the components which make up a front page?
·         Masthead title of the magazine                                                              
·         Cover lines- short statements on the front of the magazine to describe the articles inside
·         Sub-heads- secondary heading or title
·         Caption- a bit of text that accompanies an illustration
·         Headshot- a picture of someone’s head
·         Sell lines- something that sells the magazine ‘exclusive’
·         Rag out- a clip or quote from a previous edition
·         Call out- text that explains a picture, often has an arrow pointing to a particular area
·         By line- the writer
·         Headline- title of the main story
·         Pug-‘ears of the magazine’ in the corners of the front page
·         Bullets- large dots
·         Splash- front page
·         Main image- a picture on the front relating to the main article
·         Puff- short sentence that attracts the reader
·         WOB- ‘white and black’
·         Secondary image- a smaller image than the main image
